I used to live in a house with many rooms, yet none of them really felt truly my own. I was the caretaker, the curator of these rooms to make a home for another. Many times, I felt like I was simply a visitor.
Virginia Woolf said that intellectual freedom depended upon both material things & financial freedom - and that without affording an actual room of one’s own we were doomed for a less creative life. Granted, our modern freedoms have been hard fought and won by those who have come before us, but I do beg to differ with this somewhat antiquated (and entitled) view.
Finding our place in the world is not determined by another, a bounty in our bank account nor a dedicated space. Of course, having an actual room is superb in every way, and you never have to ask me twice to go away, but to carve out a space and take a metaphorical seat can be anywhere.
As a side note, having empty rooms does not always offer the refuge that one might anticipate. Though I live alone, and have many rooms now to call my own, I would love these rooms to be filled with noise and banter and laughter. At this moment in time they are not - some would call this the Empty Nest.
I always find my own room in another, more intimate space, which probably helps me to feel at home wherever I go.
I like to think that a room of one’s own starts with that place inside of us, that only we can access, where we can retreat to at anytime, as opposed to an actual physical place.
Not so woo-woo a concept, because if we look outside of ourselves for what we need, we are never truly blossoming into who we are. Knowing our place in the world and accepting ourselves as we are stops us seeking, or grasping, for the false scaffolding that comes from an external source.
When we attempt to gratify our own internal needs through external provisions, we may internally perish - our essence cannot flourish in this arid intimate desert.
And what arrives when in a state of being at home within ourselves, is a dialogue. We uncover a thread of validation and a clarity where creativity can flourish, weaving into every part of who we are.
Creativity becomes expansive when we quiet the noise of the world around us. We see & feel what has been dulled by the cacophony of modern life. Stepping away from the things that tether us to our everyday allows us to discard emotional baggage and the noise, so we can begin to tune in to what we require to build our resources.
There are many practical avenues. One accessible entry point is Meditation - robust evidence of the benefits is irrefutable. When we practice, we get the Grand Tour of all the internal rooms of our being and we get to befriend all of who we are..without having to travel anywhere.
I recently made a pact with myself to take the time -
To chuck out the stuff that is still lurking in the attic of my mind & heart to better enable my attention to the work I love to do;
Engage in more medicinal activities of moving my body, preferably in the elements.
While a total work in progress, I go…
And I sit
And I read
And I write
And I walk
And I Yoga
And sometimes I swim.
I turn my connection to the world off for a time - making boundaries, balancing what I need and the necessary obligations and commitments I have.
I feel like this my “Re-Wilding” time. It is a time to find that person within who gets lost every so often. I quite like me, and I want her back when she strays too far.
Tell me … What are the ways you plant seeds to re-wild your internal world?
Here is an idea if you want to get away and need some extra support and structure.
BUDGALONG X Moore Nourishing Life - I have teamed up again this year with Budgalong Lodge at Spicers Creek. It truly is a special place to decompress, reclaim time, focus and find clarity. I wrote about it HERE and I have 2 different opportunities for connection that I am building on moving forward.
- Firstly, a deeply immersive 1:1 retreat designed to help you reconnect with your values and strengths, leaving with a clear, strategic plan to integrate them seamlessly into your daily life. This is for those feeling stuck in their usual routines, ready to reimagine and elevate their approach to physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Through guided exploration, we will
refine your mindset,
clarify your vision, and
create a personalized roadmap for lasting transformation.
The experience includes pre-retreat exercises and a follow-up session for accountability and ongoing support. This is your time to unravel, explore new possibilities, and step into a life you truly want to be in. Take a look here, contact me and let’s have a conversation if this is something you are interested in.
- Secondly, come and let me nourish you with food, stretches, guided meditations, conversation. The rest of the time you attend to your own work or creative venture - writing, painting, studying, reading, exploring the property with walks or simply rest. Less intensive than the above option, but a great place to begin. Take a look HERE.
We have set aside 2 dates, but will work with you to find a time for you.
Come and still your mind, nurture your heart and nourish your body in a place where there is nothing to distract you and everything to inspire you.
I encourage you to take a look.
As always, I love you being here, so thank you
